Getting started
7 questions
What is KURVO?
A safety app for going out by motorbike, by bike, on foot or by car. It records your ride, lets your guardians watch you live and, if something goes wrong, alerts them with an SOS. To ride with your people there are private groups. "Go out together. Come home together."
I've just signed up, where do I start?
First add someone you trust as a contact, with their code or QR, and ask them to be your guardian. Then tap the yellow "Start" button on the bottom bar: the assistant walks you through five steps and you can leave almost everything as it comes.
What's on the bottom bar?
Home (your people and their latest posts), Groups, the yellow "Start" button in the middle, Guardian (the eye, which turns red with a number when someone you watch is out) and You, your profile. With a ride under way, the middle button turns green and says "View ride".
What permissions does it need, and why?
Precise location set to "Always", so the ride keeps recording with the screen off: that is the one that matters most. Notifications, so SOS alerts and your contacts' requests reach you. Camera, only to scan QR codes. On Android, also take KURVO out of battery saving. You can check it all in Settings → Phone permissions.
Can I use it in Spanish?
Yes. KURVO follows your phone or browser language between Spanish and English; if your device is set to any other language, you get English.
Does it work with my watch?
Yes. On Wear OS 3 or later watches, install KURVO from Google Play on the watch: you will see speed, km and time, with SOS, Breakdown and Finish buttons. On Apple Watch (watchOS 11 with an iPhone on iOS 18) your ride shows up in the Smart Stack with km and speed.
Rides
10 questions
How do I start recording?
Tap "Start" on the bottom bar. The assistant has five steps: how you are heading out, who looks out for you, the activity, how you want to ride and the last details. If you are repeating, "Same as last time" fills it all in at once. From the moment you start, it records even if you lock the phone or lose signal.
Watched, anonymous or with a group?
It is the first step. "Watched": you go solo and your guardians see you live and get your alerts. "Anonymous": only you record and nobody follows you. "With a group": you pick one of your groups and ride together; you can also bring your guardians, who watch only you.
What happens in anonymous mode?
Only you record: nobody sees where you are and nobody gets your alerts. That is why the SOS changes: hold it and it calls 112 directly. And "Breakdown" opens your phone's share menu so you can send your location by WhatsApp, SMS or anything else to whoever you choose.
Free, with a route or at a set pace?
It is the "How do you want to ride?" step. "Free": we record wherever you go. "With a route": you pick a route and we mark it on the map as you ride, with how much is left. "At a set pace": you set an average in km/h and we warn you if you go faster or slower.
How do I follow a route?
At the "How do you want to ride?" step, choose "With a route" and tap one of your routes or "See all routes". You can also open a route in ☰ → Routes and tap "Ride this route": the assistant starts with it loaded. While riding, the panel tells you how many kilometres are left.
Can I schedule a ride?
Yes. At the last step, instead of "Start now", pick a day and time on the calendar and tap "Schedule". You get a reminder as the time approaches and your guardians see it as pending. Until you start it there is nothing live to follow.
What is the live panel and the +/− button?
It is the bottom part of the ride screen. With "−" you see a single line: speed in km/h, time and distance. With "+" you also see the average, the climb and what is left of the route or, in a group, how many of you there are. Pause, Finish, Breakdown and SOS are always at hand.
What happens if I stop for fuel or food?
You can tap "Pause": the stopwatch stops and recording halts until you tap "Resume". If you do not pause, that is fine too: the summary shows total time and moving time separately. If you have the stop alert on and the stop drags on, the app will ask whether you are OK.
How do I end a ride?
Tap "Finish" on the panel and confirm. You will see the summary: distance, total and moving time, average, top speed, climb, descent and the replay of your route. The ride stays in My rides even if you do not post it. On a group ride, if you did not open it, the button says "Leave" and only takes you out.
Where can I see all my rides?
In ☰ → My rides (or in You). They are grouped by month, each with a thumbnail of the route, km, time and climb. You can filter by activity and by published, not published or archived. The "···" button on each one lets you post, archive or delete it.
Safety and guardians
10 questions
What is a guardian?
A trusted contact who has agreed to look out for you. They see you live on the map during your watched rides and get your alerts: SOS, possible crash, stop and breakdown. They do not follow you outside rides. You can have several, in the order you choose.
How do I set someone as my guardian?
They have to be your contact and accept. Ask them from Contacts (tap them → "Make guardian") or from Edit profile → Your guardians; they need to have their phone number set. They go in order: an SOS reaches the top one first. Change the order in Edit profile and, on each ride, choose who looks out for you at step 2.
I've been asked to be a guardian, what do I do?
Accept the request in your notifications (the figure on Home → Notifications). Add your phone number with its country code so they can text and call you in an SOS, and save the KURVO SOS contact when the app offers it. From then on you will see their watched rides in the Guardian tab.
I'm someone's guardian, where do I see them?
In the Guardian tab (the eye on the bar), which turns red with a number when someone you watch is out. It is a map: each person shows up with their photo and a ring that tells you how they are doing: green riding, amber stopped, red no signal. Scheduled rides appear separately, as pending.
How do I send an SOS?
With a ride under way, hold the SOS button for a second and a half. It alerts your guardians with your exact position and you will see the "SOS sent" screen with each one's status; from there you can call 112 or cancel with "I'm fine, cancel the SOS". Without data, the alert waits in a queue and you can send a text from your phone.
How does the SOS chain work?
We alert your guardians one at a time, in your order. The first one gets the notification and a text message at once and, if they do not respond within 30 seconds, a phone call. If they do not tap "On my way" within 2 minutes, we move on to the next one. If nobody in the chain responds, we tell you on the SOS screen and offer to call 112.
What if it is just a breakdown?
Tap "Breakdown". It tells your guardians (by notification and text message) and the people riding with you that you need a hand, without the emergency tone or the calls of an SOS. It is for "I'm stranded, come and get me". In anonymous mode, it shares your location with whoever you choose instead.
What is the stop alert?
At the last step of the assistant, "If I stop for more than…", you choose a time (or "Don't alert"). If you stay stopped longer than that, the app asks "Everything OK?" and, if you do not answer within a minute, it alerts your guardians and your group with your position. You can change the default time in Settings.
Does it detect crashes?
Yes. If the sensors pick up a hard impact and you then stay still, the app asks you straight away "Everything OK?". If you do not answer within a minute, it alerts your guardians with your position, flagging that there was an impact and how hard, so they know whether it might be serious.
Which number do SOS texts and calls come from?
From the KURVO SOS number, not from the phone of the person asking for help. Save it in your contacts so you recognise it at once, and mark it as a favourite so it rings even in Do Not Disturb. You will find it in Settings → Phone permissions → KURVO SOS contact.
Contacts
9 questions
What is a contact?
Someone who added you with your code (or you with theirs) and you both accepted. KURVO has no public profiles, no people search and no followers: only your contacts see what you post, and your guardians come from among them. You will find them in You → "Contacts and guardians".
How do I add someone?
With their personal code (like KRV-XXXX-XX) or by scanning their QR, in "Add contact": in You, tap your code under your name, or go to Contacts → Add. They get a request and, once they accept, you are contacts. To scan QR codes you need the latest version from the store.
Where is my code? Can I change it?
At the top of "Add contact" you have your code and your QR, to show, copy or share with a link. If you gave it to the wrong person, tap "Change my code": the old code and QR stop working right away and your contacts stay your contacts.
What do my contacts see?
Your posts, depending on what you choose for each one: "Full" (map, route and figures), "Numbers only" (no map) or "Only me" (nobody). They can "Like", comment, message you and ask you to be their guardian. They do not see where you are: only your guardians and your group on a ride see that.
Can I hide my rides from one particular contact?
Yes. In Contacts, tap them → "Visibility for this person" → "Private". They stop seeing your posts and getting notified about them, even though you stay contacts. If you would rather cut ties completely, there is "Remove contact" or "Block".
Can I give a contact an alias?
Yes. In Contacts, tap the person and type an alias: that is how you will see them in contacts, guardians and alerts. Only you see it; they still see their own name. In the same menu you can mark them as a favourite so they show up first in your list.
Can I message my contacts?
Yes, in Messages (the figure on Home → Messages): chats with your contacts and with your groups, with photos and search. You can only message your contacts. If a conversation gets too much, mute it for 8 hours, a week or for good without leaving it.
How do I block someone?
In Contacts, tap them → "Block" (also from their profile). You stop being contacts and each other's guardians, they cannot message you or add you with your code, and they are not told. You can undo it in Settings → Blocked people.
What shows up on Home?
At the top, live group rides. Then your groups (squares) and your contacts (circles) in one strip: you see three of each and swipe for the rest, with whoever is out first. Below, your upcoming rides, your month (km, rides, time and climb) and "Latest from your people", which opens the feed: under "Contacts", what you and your contacts post; under "My groups", your groups' rides.
Groups
10 questions
What is a group for and how do I create one?
For your regulars. In Groups tap "Create", give it a name and choose the activities you do. Every group is private and has its own chat, calendar, stats and "Group rides". Whoever creates it runs it and can appoint delegates to help.
Can you join a group straight away with its code?
Yes. Every group has its own code and QR (inside the group, under "Code"). Anyone who has it types it in Groups → "Join with a code" or scans the QR, and they are in straight away, with no approval. So share it only with people you want inside.
How do I add people to a group?
Two ways: give them the group's code or QR and they are straight in; or, if you run the group, tap "Invite" and choose from your contacts: they get the invitation and join when they accept. Being in a group does not make you contacts or show anyone's personal code.
What can the people running the group do?
The creator and their delegates can invite their contacts, change the group code (the old one, its link and its QR stop working; people already inside stay), set a maximum number of people and "Remove" someone or "Remove and block" them so they cannot come back. The creator also appoints delegates and edits the group.
What do the people in my group see?
The members, the group chat and calendar and, on a group ride, everyone on the map. In "Group rides" they see each person's figures; the route only if you posted it as "Full". Your personal rides only if you also post them in that group. Your personal code, never.
How does a group ride work?
In the assistant choose "With a group" and the group. The ride belongs to the group, not to whoever opens it: every member gets a notification and can join while it is open, even if they turn up late. You all see each other on the same map, each in your own colour, and in "More options" → Group you can alert each other, share the route and chat.
How do we arrange a group ride?
Inside the group tap "Schedule": the assistant opens with the group already picked and, at the last step, you set the day and time. The ride shows up in the group's calendar and members get the invitation under "Upcoming rides" on Home, where they answer "I'm in" or "Can't make it".
What does the leader do?
The leader is whoever opens the group ride. If you are following, tap "Follow Leader" on the map so the camera follows them and you do not get lost at a junction; "Follow Me" centres you again. The leader can also set a finish point and is the one who closes the ride for everyone.
Can I set a finish point?
Yes, if you opened the ride: in "More options" (···) tap "Set finish" and tap the map or search for a place, or use "Finish at my position". Everyone sees live how far each person is from the finish. It is not a race: it is about knowing whether the group is still together.
Who closes a group ride?
The leader, with "Finish": it closes for everyone, each person gets a notification and moves on to their summary. If you are not the leader, your button says "Leave" and only takes you out; what you have recorded is not lost.
Posting and sharing
6 questions
Is everything I record posted?
No. Every ride stays just for you until you post it. On the summary you choose "Who sees it" and tap "Post and share"; if you like, you also post it in one of your groups. Whatever you do not post stays in My rides and you can post it later from its "···" menu.
What do "Full", "Numbers only" and "Only me" mean?
They set who sees each post. "Full": your contacts see it on Home and on your profile, with the map and route. "Numbers only": they see distance, time and climb, with no map or route. "Only me": nobody else, not even by link. You choose it on each ride and can change it later.
Which image shows on the post?
The one you prepare in "Get your image ready" when posting: you choose the background (KURVO, dark or light map, satellite, one of your photos, solid colour or none), the line colour and thickness and which figures show. It is saved square and it is what your contacts see. On the summary you can swap it for a photo or go back to the map.
How do I share it on WhatsApp or Instagram?
After "Get your image ready", tap "Next" and choose: WhatsApp (chat or status, with a link and preview), Instagram (story or post), Facebook, animated GIF, Save or "More" for other apps. There are Story 9:16, Post 1:1 and Landscape formats. Anyone who gets the link can open it, except with "Only me".
Can I change, archive or delete it later?
Yes. Open it (My rides → "···" → "Open publication") and tap "···" at the top to open "Manage publication": there you change who sees it, turn on "Full summary" (top speed, moving time, climb and descent), archive it (it disappears but keeps its likes and comments) or delete it. Deleting it does not delete the ride.
Can people comment on my posts?
Yes. Contacts who can see it can "Like" it and comment, and you can see who liked it. You can delete your own comments and, on your posts, anyone's. If you also posted it in a group, its members can do the same.
Maps and routes
5 questions
Can I change the map style?
Yes, with the layers button on the map: each tap moves to the next one (light, dark, IGN street, topographic and satellite) and, if you hold it, you pick one from a list. Topographic works well in the mountains and satellite lets you see the actual terrain.
Are there ready-made routes?
Yes, thousands all over Spain, official KURVO ones and from the community. In ☰ → Routes → "Community" you filter them by area, activity, distance, climb and time; they load 20 at a time with a preview. On each one you can save it, follow it, see who has done it and tap "Ride this route".
How do I create a route?
In ☰ → Routes → "My routes", tap "Create route" and tap the map to drop points: the route is traced between them for the profile you pick (car, motorbike, bike, MTB, walking or hiking). You can also save a ride you have already done as a route, from its summary.
Does it work with GPX files?
Yes, both ways. In ☰ → Routes, "Import route (GPX)" brings in routes from Garmin, Strava, Komoot and the like. And from each route's menu or a ride's summary, "Export GPX" gets it out to open in another app.
What if I go somewhere with no coverage?
Recording does not depend on the network: GPS keeps working, everything is stored on the phone and it uploads by itself once you are back in signal. To see the map without data, download the area beforehand in ☰ → Offline maps: frame it, pick the style and tap "Download this zone".
Statistics
7 questions
What numbers does KURVO keep?
In ☰ → Stats: rides, distance, total and moving time, average speed, climb, split by activity and monthly trend. You can filter by activity and period (7, 30 or 90 days, this year or custom) and show only yours or include your groups.
Where do I see my records?
In ☰ → Stats, under "Records": your best ride by distance and your longest by time. Further down, in "Deeper dive", you have your Eddington number, a calendar of the last 26 weeks and a year-over-year comparison.
What are challenges?
Goals that count themselves from your rides: weekly, monthly, for the season (the year) and all time. Weekly and monthly ones renew and you can win them again. Some stay locked until you level up, and the higher your level, the higher the target. Find them in ☰ → Challenges and on Home, under “Routes and challenges”.
How do I level up?
With experience (XP): 1 XP per minute on the move, 25 per finished ride and whatever each challenge you win gives. There are 100 levels and each one takes more than the last; every 10 levels you change rank (Rookie, Rider, Explorer… up to Myth). Everything you have done with KURVO since the start counts.
What are Super KURVO and badges?
Each season (one per year, from 1 January to 31 December) brings four big challenges, the Super KURVO. Win one and you get lots of XP and a badge that stays in your challenges forever. On 1 January the new season starts with its own four.
Can I get my data out?
Yes. Each ride exports to GPX from its summary. And in Settings → "Download my data" you get a file with everything KURVO stores about you: profile, rides, tracks, alerts and posts. Your data is yours.
Why is speed in km/h even on foot?
The whole app uses km/h: live, on the summary, in posts and in splits. On foot it shows one decimal (for example 4.6 km/h). Pace in minutes per kilometre was removed because it went wild at low speed.
Account and privacy
6 questions
Who can see where I am?
Only during a ride and only the people you choose: your guardians on watched rides and the people in your group on a group ride. Your contacts do not see your position, and in anonymous mode nobody does. Outside a ride, KURVO does not share where you are.
What is my phone number for? Can anyone see it?
Add it with the country code in You → "Phone for alerts". It is only used in emergencies: if you are a guardian, to text and call you when someone asks for help; and, while you have an active alert, so whoever looks out for you can call you. It does not appear on your profile and nobody else sees it.
Where can I see if a permission is missing?
In Settings → "Phone permissions". It shows how many are ready and the status of each one: precise location, location with the screen off ("Always"), notifications, KURVO SOS contact, camera and, on Android, battery saver. If something is missing, the button next to it fixes it or takes you to your phone settings.
Can I choose which alerts I get?
KURVO notifications are switched on or off with your phone's notification permission (Settings → Phone permissions → Notifications); if you are a guardian, keep them on, because that is how SOS alerts reach you. What you can do is mute a conversation in Messages for 8 hours, a week or for good.
What else can I change in Settings?
Your contacts, your code, your guardians and blocked people; the default stop alert; under "Map & GPS", your line colour and thickness, left-handed mode (map buttons on the left) and how long the screen stays on while riding; and under "Legal & data", downloading your data.
How do I delete my account?
At the bottom of Settings, "Delete account". Your profile, rides and history are deleted. It is final: there is no undo. If you want a copy first, use "Download my data".
Common problems
10 questions
Recording stops when I lock the phone
It is almost always the location permission: it has to be "Always", with precise location on, not "While using the app". Check it in Settings → Phone permissions: if something is missing, the button next to it takes you to fix it. On Android, also take KURVO out of battery saving.
My phone kills the app in the background
Take KURVO out of battery saving: on Android the button is in Settings → Phone permissions → Battery saver. Some brands (Xiaomi, Huawei, Samsung, OPPO) are especially aggressive and also want the app marked as "unrestricted" or allowed to auto-start in the system settings.
I am not getting notifications
Check Settings → Phone permissions → Notifications and that your phone is not in Do Not Disturb. If you have just changed phone, open the app once with a connection so the new device registers. So you never miss an SOS, save the KURVO SOS contact and mark it as a favourite.
My guardians do not get the text or the call
Each guardian needs their phone number with the country code in You → "Phone for alerts": without it, they only get the notification. Also ask them to save the KURVO SOS contact and mark it as a favourite, so they recognise it and it rings even in Do Not Disturb.
I cannot scan a QR code
Scanning needs the latest version of KURVO from the store and camera permission (Settings → Phone permissions → Camera). In the meantime, you can type the code by hand in "Add contact" or, for a group, in Groups → "Join with a code".
I am a guardian and I see nobody on the map
The Guardian map only shows rides that are UNDER WAY. Scheduled ones appear separately, with their day and time, and move onto the map when they start. Also check that you accepted being their guardian and that they picked you for that ride: on each one they decide who looks out for them.
I am not getting the app updates
KURVO updates itself: it downloads improvements when you open it and, when one is ready, "Update" appears in the ☰ menu (with a ride under way, it waits until you finish). Some updates need the latest version from the store, and the app tells you. In ☰ → "What's new" you can see what each update brings.
Can I log in without internet?
Yes, if you had already logged in on that phone and did not log out: your session stays saved and the app opens without a connection. You can record a ride and anything pending uploads by itself once you are back online. To log in for the first time or after logging out you do need internet.
What happens if I lose connection during a ride?
Nothing serious: recording carries on, GPS keeps working and everything is stored on the phone. Your alerts (SOS, stop, breakdown) wait in a queue and go out as soon as there is signal. If points are still pending when you finish, the summary stays a draft and cannot be posted until they are all up, which happens by itself with coverage.
Does the map have a compass?
Yes. Among the map buttons on a ride there is one with two modes: compass (the map turns with you, following your heading) and padlock (north always up). Tap it to switch from one to the other.
